This scary name is nothing but a hoax spread by Xbox 360 critics. With proper handling and extra care any Xbox user can avoid the Red Ring of Death.

Here are some tips which can account for better performance of the console:

1. Make sure that the gaming console is properly ventilated and cooled sufficiently. For this put the Xbox 360 vertically and put two piles of video tapes or anything to keep it elevated so that the side that's facing the floor is not covered by the floor and the hot air is fully ventilated.

2. A source of fresh air such as a window, an air conditioning unit or a vent can help in circulation of fresh air around the console so that it can blow out hot stale air.

3. Avoid putting the console on the carpet as it is usually full of dust and fibers and cut off the system's air flow. Instead, placing the console onto a desk, table or even on a large book will greatly help in longer durability of the console.

4. With the console's fans constantly spinning in that small case, it's pretty easy for dust, dirt and other garbage to block the system's ventilation. You can use cleaning wipes so that the dirt can be easily wiped by the tissues. Make sure that the game Cd's are clean and dirt free. Dusty and dirty Cd's usually create friction which causes disk read errors and sometimes causes problems with the disk tray laser.

5. Switch off the console via dashboard, instead of using the button. You have to hold the Guide button on controller till you see an option for switching it off. Then you can switch it off. You should not switch it off using the button which usually makes the hard drive to put on extra effort. Avoid switching the Xbox 360 off through mains as it will make the console flash red light. You have to then switch it off and then switch it on again if it runs OK then well and good or else you have the red rings of death permanently.

6. Marathon gaming sessions usually stresses the Xbox 360, so you should make sure to power down the console for some period of time and give it a breather. You should always remember to shut down your Xbox after finishing your gaming session.

7. If you're a dedicated Xbox 360 gamer is Newer Xbox 360 models, particularly the new 60GB model introduced in July of 2008 which have better cooling systems and are less likely to give the dreaded Red Ring of Death.
